Composite insulated cross-arms offer a viable alternative to conventional transmission support designs with steel cross-arms, and have proven to be the optimal solution for achieving the highest level of line compaction. The use of insulated cross-arms as structural elements in new-builds can enable the construction of light and compact lines which are aesthetically pleasing, environmentally less disruptive, require narrower right-of-way and can be more economical from total cost-of-ownership stand point.
Voltage uprating is an attractive technique for achieving substantial, cost effective and rapid capacity increases in the transmission network. Traditionally, voltage uprating of an overhead line involved radically re-building the existing tower heads or dismantling and building a new compact overhead line in the existing corridor. However, with the technical advancements and commercial availability of high strength composite insulated cross-arms, this scenario has changed and voltage uprating of existing overhead lines has become more attractive. The application of insulated cross-arms to replace existing lattice steel cross-arms and insulator sets can satisfy the required internal and external electrical clearances for uprated voltage operation and enable the use of existing tower bodies with minimal modification, thereby reducing lead times, labor-use and involved investments.
